HERE AND NOW at Museum Ludwig - Heimo Zobernig

February 20 – May 22, 2016

The Museum Ludwig began its new exhibition series titled HERE AND NOW with the Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig (b. 1958). The series serves as a platform for especially artists who work in an interdisciplinary manner and thus offer a cross-over of a wide range of artistic forms of expression.
With his work, Zobernig – who has held the chair of professor for sculpture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts since 2000 – is active in the classical genres of sculpture, painting, and drawing, but also makes use of other means of representation, including installation and video art. Already in the early 1980s, he used these media to create works with a sculptural quality, which expanded into the exhibition space as installations. In 2015, he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale with an exhibition curated by Yilmaz Dziewior: By adding architectural elements and furnishings to the interior of the Austrian pavilion, he created a new space that encouraged a discourse with the biennale and its mechanisms. Zobernig recreated part of this installation in the Museum Ludwig as a stage-like element and presentation pedestal, which entered a dialogue with sculptures from the museum’s collection.
