The exhibition HERE AND NOW at Museum Ludwig: together for and against focuses on positions of contemporary art in Japan, as well as on their historical precursors. The starting point of the presentation are historical photographs from the collection of the M+ in Hong Kong, which document the actions and performances of various avant-garde groups in Japan in the 1960s. These are juxtaposed with contemporary works by Japanese artists: Under the title Double Stories of Museum Ludwig, the six-member artist collective Chim↑Pom (founded in Tokyo in 2005) conceived a multi-part, often interactive intervention that facilitates various processes of exchange between the interior and exterior space, for example, in that motifs from Hans Haacke’s Der Pralinenmeister (The Chocolate Master, 1981), a work from the collection of the Museum Ludwig, can be found on the packaging of Turkish sweets from a patisserie on Keupstrasse in Cologne-Mülheim. Also on view is the video installation Abstracted/Family (2019/20) by the artist Kōki Tanaka (b. 1975 in Tochigi), which addresses Japanese migration history and everyday racism in Japan.
