Ed Atkins - A Tumour

2013

Ed Atkins, born 1982 in Oxford, Great Britain, lives and works in London. He studied at the Central St. Martins College of Art and Design and at the Slade School of Fine Art. His works comprise videos, video installations, texts and drawings and have been exhibited internationally many times. In many works avatars are acting, which spoken with the artist function as “surrogates”, as “hyperrealistic susbstitute for men and things”.

Its exceptional image quality ensures a proximity to real life which, at the same time, exerts an alienation effect.

A Tumour (in English), 2011
The video work A Tumour (in English), 2011 deals with thoughts about life and death, disease and the body, restriction and liberation and with the relationships between the material and immaterial. The computer-generated film sequences used are supported by precise cut rhythms and an apparently grotesque text, as well as the use of rich colours. Ed Atkins succeeds in developing his very own image language using the still young digital medium. For viewers, he creates a bodily art experience which above all is transported to the viewers.
