Hidden behind the hybrid construction of Reena Spaulings is both an artist identity and a gallery, as well as a fictive protagonist in an eponymous novel. Appearing for the first time in 2004, the artist collective pursues an artistic practice that undermines the classical division of labour and hierarchies of the art system. In doing so, the collective strives to thwart the conventional generation of value through an immediately recognisable style and the overemphasis of biography. Characteristic of their working method is a painterly approach and analysis with multi-layered references to the venue and situation of the respective exhibition.
