Nil Yalter - D’Après „Stimmung“, 1973
2016
Nil Yalter was born in Cairo in 1938 and raised in Turkey. She studied at Robert College in Istanbul and, in 1965, moved to Paris, where she continues to live and work today. Since her first solo exhibition in the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1973, her work has been presented internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Centre Pompidou, Paris (2012), Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome (2010), and PS1 MOMA, New York (2008). The artist works in and often combines diverse media, including video, painting, photography, drawing, and multi-media installation. Her works address both social and anthropological/ethnographic issues. Since the 1960s, Nil Yalter has developed an artistic approach which translates scholarly, documentary research into fictive narrations. In this way, she presents political issues such as labour migration, cultural identity, and gender roles from new perspectives.
D’Après ‘Stimmung’, 1973
The seven-part series of assemblages was created immediately after a performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s composition Stimmung (première in Paris in 1968), which Nil Yalter attended in Paris in 1973. The artist translated what she heard and the rhythmic polyphony of the sung text comprised of magical names into a visual tableau. In collages and drawings, historical facts, names of gods from various cultures, and the question of identity in the twentieth century are brought together and contextualised.
