In close collaboration with the artist, three motifs have been selected from Katz’s Havelhöhe series that not only document the everyday of the patients at the Havelhöhe hospital in Berlin but are also characterized by a unique artistic perspective. At the same time, Katz’s works are a sociohistorical document: the architectural views can be understood as a reference to changing social appropriations of architecture. The buildings were erected during National Socialism for the regime’s Reichsakademie and for training soldiers.
With this atmospheric view through open French doors Benjamin Katz uses strong black-and-white contrasts to generate aesthetic tension that also continue on the level of content. The artistic staging of the sweeping, winterly courtyard is thwarted by the buildings’ original and historical function as a military drill ground.
