Andy Warhol called his friend Christopher Makos “the most modern photographer in America.” In 1981, the New York-based photographer and the Pop Art legend retreated to Makos’s studio with a variety of wigs and makeup for a two-day photo session. The result is a series of impressive black-and-white portraits, a selection of which is now being presented in the retrospective Andy Warhol Now at the Museum Ludwig. We see not the Andy Warhol we know, but Lady Warhol, one of the artist’s female alter egos. Makos plays with gender identity in a similar manner to his teacher Man Ray, who went down in art history when he photographed Marcel Duchamp as Rrose Sélavy.
