Irony, humor, and absurdity are fundamental means by which Evelyn Taocheng Wang explores cultural identities and social relationships in her work. Equally characteristic of her work is the reference to the North American painter Agnes Martin (1912–2004), whose minimalist painting Untitled (2004) forms the background of Wang’s edition. Overlaid text and image elements unfold new cultural references and levels of meaning. Wang offers die Mode (2025) (German for “the fashion”) through textual commentary from within the image and explains the motif::

„I first saw the two characters, the mouse and the elephant, during my German course at Tongji University in Shanghai. After moving to Germany, I actually saw a poster for the “Sendung mit der Maus” program on an advertising column, a large one in front of the Kölnischer Kunstverein in 2019. In this episode, which I have selected, they talk about fashion. The elephant is sleeping, while the mouse wants to ask the elephant to comment on her new dress. But the elephant just keeps sleeping without reacting. And you can see from the mouse’s expression that she is a little annoyed. The dress is very long and doesn’t fit the mouse very well.“.
