Since the 1960s, the often provocative actions of artist VALIE EXPORT (*1940 in Linz, Austria) have caused a sensation. Her photographic and filmic self-portraits in her role as a woman and artist are iconic. She is fully committed to showing her body as a projection surface for patriarchal structures and gender-specific forms of representation. In this edition, she expands the dialogical relationship between body and environment by turning the artist’s hand into a complex carrier of signs and meanings that is constantly encoded, decoded and transformed in relation to its environment. VALIE EXPORT describes this interaction in her theoretical writing: “A state of mind can thus be expressed firstly through the configuration of landscape parts, secondly through the configuration of body parts and thirdly, this is the innovation of my work, of body parts in the landscape” (Körperkonfigurationen, 1976).
