In her artistic practice, Melike Kara (*1985 in Bergisch Gladbach, lives and works in Cologne) processes traditions and stories that are in danger of disappearing. Her Kurdish-Alevi roots form the starting point and artistic approach. By collecting and archiving photos of everyday moments, landscapes and memories as well as an ornamental painterly style inspired by Kurdish tapestries, the artist questions the loss and visibility of suppressed cultural practices.
For the 2024 acquisition of the “Junger Ankauf”, Melike Kara translated fragmentary traces of Kurdish culture and identity into the spatial installation “tirkel” – presented site-specifically at Art Cologne 2024. Unlike the painting on canvas that has now become part of the Museum Ludwig collection, the wall design only existed for the limited duration of the fair. But just as cultural techniques and identity-forming traditions can be passed on, the site-specific wall art of “tirkel” also lives on: the wall design has given rise to independent works that carry Kara’s artistic ideas into new spatial, thematic and individual contexts.
