Anna Boghiguian - A Poem / 88 untitled drawings (on Constantine Cavafy)

2024

Anna Boghiguian’s (born in Cairo in 1946) work includes figurative murals, (note-) books, drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures, as well as large-scale, often site-specific installations. She often works spontaneously on site and sees herself as a sensitive observer of human existence. Her work oscillates between past and present, poetry and politics, history and literature, creating artworks that celebrate a globally united humanity while reflecting on the aftermath of historical conflicts.

In 2024, Anna Boghiguian was awarded the 30th Wolfgang Hahn Prize by the Society for Modern Art at the Museum Ludwig. For the museum, she designed the site-specific multimedia installation A Poem, in which she combines the poem “The Battle of Magnesia” (1913) and other writings by the poet Konstantinos Kavafis with sculptures, cut-outs, and drawings to create an expressive representation and establish references to the present. This work is complemented by a series of 88 untitled drawings (on Constantine Cavafy), which refer to Kavafis’ poems about the history and decadence of the Hellenistic era in Egypt. Boghiguians work captivates with its directness, expressiveness, and poetic view of the world. Guest juror Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev emphasizes how well the uniqueness of her work corresponds to the strong expressionist positions of the Museum Ludwig.
