HERE AND NOW at Museum Ludwig - Günter Peter Straschek. Emigration–Film–Politics

March 3 - July, 1 2018

Günther Peter Straschek (1942–2009) was a filmmaker, historian, and one of the first researchers of European film emigration. His film Filmemigration aus Nazideutschland (Film Emigration from Nazi Germany, 1975) is one of the most impressive documentaries in German television history. After years in the archives of the WDR, this film became for the first time the focus of an exhibition in the Museum Ludwig. In his five-hour work, Straschek let more than 2,000 film professionals who had fled the Nazis have their say. Also on view was his radical early work, including for the first time the short film E_in Western für den SDS_ (A Western for the Socialist German Student Union), which was confiscated in 1968, never screened, and for that very reason became a legend. This film resulted in Straschek being expelled from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. The Israeli German artist Eran Schaerf (b. 1962) developed an architecture for the exhibition that reflected the themes of “Emigration—Film—Politics.”
