Johannes Wohnseifer - The Endless Bridge
2013
Special acquisition in memory of Karsten Korang
Johannes Wohnseifer (*1967, Cologne) lives and works in Cologne and Erftstadt. His works have already been shown in numerous exhibitions, including at the Sprengel Museum Hanover, the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, the Kunsthalle in Vienna, the Museum Folkwang and the Bonner Kunstverein. He has been a professor at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne since 2007 and works with painting, sculpture, photography and installations, often with conceptual references to social and historical events.

The Endless Bridge, 2004, Installation (Bicycle, box of paint, several plastic bottles filled with Rhine water, canister, air pump, black cardboard box with photos), 96 × 160 × 63 cm
The acquired installation consists of several objects – a bicycle, an air pump, filled water bottles, a can of paint, a box of photographs – from an action by the artist in Cologne. Johannes Wohnseifer painted his bicycle in so-called Cologne Bridge Green, the color used to paint most of Cologne’s eight Rhine bridges since 1929. The artist rode this very bicycle for several kilometers along the river and also covered the bridges, connecting them, which in turn connect the two sides of the Rhine. At various points, he filled plastic bottles with Rhine water. The title of the work, “The Endless Bridge,” refers to the referential color of the bicycle and, at the same time, to its function of being able to transport something from one point to the next.
