Since 2013 Haegue Yang has created her Sonic Sculptures, performative objects composed of countless metal bells. Following such projects as her rotating wall pieces, anthropomorphic figures, and clothing articles, the Sonic Instruments make reference to ritual rattle objects from diverse cultural contexts.

This edition comprising a kitchen utensil invites us, by swinging the piece, to become acoustically activated and is adapted from the maraca, a Latin American percussion instrument. The generation of sensory resonance through motion and the combination of domestic and ritual materials are central motifs in Yang’s polyphonic oeuvre.
