The setting for Star Thief, as in many of Rosenquist’s works and especially those he created from the 1980s on, is outer space. In his preliminary study, Rosenquist took full advantage of the means of the collage technique and optimized the available painting surface in terms of its motif capacity. He opened up the picture surface, made it spatial, and created various levels of reality. The adhesive strips and associatively joined paper cutouts demonstrate how masterfully Rosenquist composed his images.

The facsimiles and the reproductions of the works of art by the American artist James Rosenquist (1933–2017) are issued by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst in cooperation with the Museum Ludwig in conjunction with the exhibition James Rosenquist: Painting as Immersion. We thank the Estate of James Rosenquist for authorizing the edition. The sale proceeds benefit the museum.
