Huang Yong Ping:
Memorandum: Bat Project I, II, III, 2001–2004. Artist book and supplement

In conjunction with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2016, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst has published an artist book by Huang Yong Ping, which the artist had already started working on in 2004, shortly after producing his sculpture Mémorandum: Bat Project I, II, III, 2001–2003. In the work Mémorandum, which was acquired for the Museum Ludwig in connection with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize, the artist documents and reflects upon the history of his Bat Projects. The starting point for these works was the collision of a US American EP-3 espionage airplane (also known as a ‘bat’) with a Chinese military airplane over the South China Sea in 2001. All three Bat Projects were censored shortly before they were to be exhibited. The artist book, a multi-armed ‘leporello’ with sixteen A4 photo-pages conceived by Huang himself, is based on the sculpture Mémorandum.

The artist book is accompanied by a catalogue with texts by Doryun Chong and Yilmaz Dziewior. With the help of a chronological table, Huang Yong Ping presents a detailed history surrounding the Bat Projects I, II, II, which he brought up to date on the occasion of the prize.

The artist book and supplement are edited by Carla Cugini, Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig e.V. (Cologne 2016, 120 pages), subscription price: 39.80 €; signed special edition: 78 € plus shipping.
