Wolfgang-Hahn-Preis 2022:
Trying it out. Trying it on. Trying to do it better. Frank Bowling

Sir Frank Bowling (*1934 in Bartica, Guyana) has been awarded the 2022 Wolfgang Hahn Prize by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst. The award winner’s abstract painting reflects his experiences in Guyana, London and New York, and is among the most important works in the history of British art and painting in the 20th and 21st centuries. With a particular focus on materiality and color, Bowling creates his powerful paintings, experimenting with the use of chemicals, heat, and the plasticity of different visual layers. He establishes his very own rules – and yet breaks them again and again.

The publication from the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst introduces artist Frank Bowling and his work with a laudatory speech by guest juror Zoé Whitley, an interview of Bowling with Pia Gamon, a brief biography and numerous illustrations. Also included is Bowling’s seminal essay ‚It’s Not Enough to Say „Black is Beautiful“’ and other excerpts from exhibition catalogs, manuscripts, and statements by the artist.

The publication was edited by Pia Gamon, Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig e.V. (Cologne 2022/23, 104 pages with 65 col. ill.), retail price 14,80 Euro, plus shipping costs.
